The state of the economy has many people moving much more frequently than in the past. Companies are relocating employees all over the country and individuals who are laid off are now forced to search nationwide in order to find a job in their field. Packing and shipping the contents of the home has become a part time job for many families.
Added to this is the worldwide movement to “go green” by recycling and reducing waste. By preserving small shipping boxes, we can join the conservation movement while at the same time preparing for the next move. It does not take much effort and can save time and money in the end.
Shipping boxes are not cheap to purchase, so it makes sense to use them more than once. Once the box is filled, note its contents by placing a label on the box and writing on it in pencil instead of writing the contents directly on the box with a marker. Take care not to damage the box during shipping or unpacking. Break down the box after the contents have been removed and store it in a dry location. When it comes time for the next move, rebuild the box, fill it up, erase the label, and note the new contents. As labels become worn, a new label can be placed on top.
When storing empty shipping boxes, always break them down because doing so will take up less space when stored. Store all boxes together, so they can be easily found. Make sure they are placed in a dry, temperate location to prevent them from being susceptible to mold, mildew, or fire. They may be stored inside a large plastic trash bag for extra protection.
These boxes do not need to be used only for shipping purposes. They can store the ever-growing supply of festive decorations or new holiday lights. These items are not used all year long so they need to be stashed away during the off-season. Using boxes as a storage device is a great way to organize these items and place them out of the way.
When the family has finally decided to stop moving, used shipping boxes may be sold to online box companies. Some will only buy boxes in large quantities, so do some searching to find low-volume purchasers. Alternatively, consider offering the boxes to a thrift store or Goodwill because they can always use these items to store excess inventory or package fragile merchandise. If it is properly maintained, the small shipping box will have a very long life cycle.
