How To Use Your Moving Boxes After The Move: Part 1

We have all been faced with the dilemma of having stacks and stacks of boxes after a move. Do you throw them away or keep them for another move? Well if you are like me, your house was ceiling to floor with boxes when the movers left and I was looking at close to a hundred boxes that I was going to have to figure something out for.

While my first instinct was to break them all down and put them in the trash, I suddenly realized that I had paid close to $200 for them and was not about to just ship them to the dumpster. It then became a project as to how to get the best use out of them. It is amazing how creative one cat get when faced with the possibility of flushing $200 down the drain.

The first thing we did with our moving boxes was to create secondary storage with them. Moving boxes are generally stronger than most other styles of boxes and will hold up to just about anything. We took off one end of the flaps and then further supported the bottom of the box. We then stacked them on top of each other and taped them together on the outside seems.

At this point, they looked like nothing more than boxes taped together, but that was going to be taken care of quickly. Having moved in January, Xmas wrapping paper was on sale for about a $1 a roll. We purchases plain colors and wrapped the boxes up on the outside to create a seamless look and then painted the inside of the boxes. Now they were coming together very nicely.

Instead of running out and purchasing book shelves for the home office and kids room, we had sturdy shelving for stuffed animals and some of the lighter office supplies that we kept on hand at home. Instead of spending hundreds on storage space, the moving boxes were put to use. However, there were still about 70 boxes left! It is time to really get creative and think of something to do with the rest of them.
